The White River System is a major Arkansas and Missouri waterway system that includes many significant tributary streams, the waters of which all flow from the Ozarks into the Mississippi River in Desha County, Arkansas. Over the past decade or more, the Upper White River and the North Fork of the White River have become heavily polluted with industrial and commercial waste matter that is killing the rivers, lakes formed by dams on the rivers, fish that live and breed in those waters and plantlife that supports the entire biological ecosystem of the northern Arkansas and southern Missouri area. The situation there is so critical that the White River System has been submitted for inclusion on the American River Organization Top Ten list of endangered rivers. But, being on that list is merely a formality. The real issue is doing something about these problems now. Without the involvement of concerned citizens these problems will become worse. |
