On the Water

In-depth discussions about paddling issues by Marc "Canoeman" McCord are featured each month. Each discussion addresses a specific topic related to paddling, camping and related activities based upon personal experience. Articles are intended to provide information, insight and helpful tips to help others enjoy themselves on rivers while being properly prepared for their trips, and ready to respond to circumstances that may occur while participating in outdoor recreation activities on or near rivers, streams and creeks.

This month's article addresses swiftwater rescue in hydraulics, including how to prepare and what to do when a paddler becomes a victim requiring rescue. This article is based upon the author's training and recent personal experience on two rivers during high-water conditions where dam hydraulics became dangerous, and required proper procedure to resolve without injury, death or loss of property.
